Trial in Anna Politkovskaya murder case started without the laywer of her family

The trial of three men arrested in connection with the murder of Anna Politkovskaya opened on Wednesday 15 October in a Moscow military court.

The trial started without the participation of Karinna Moskalenko, who is representing the family of the murdered journalist. Ms Moskalenko, a leading Russian human rights lawyer, was still in France recovering from an alleged poisoning incident. The BBC reported that French police had opened an inquiry into allegations that a substance similar to mercury had been hidden in Moskalenko’s car while she was working at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Moskalenko and her family have suffered nausea and headaches.
